The concept of a live in caregiver is appealing to many families caring for their senior loved ones because they offer an alternative to assisted living or nursing homes. Many seniors desire to live in the comfort of their home and want to age in place.
There are specifically two types of live in caregivers: “Live-in” and “24-hour” caregiving. There are distinctions between the two that can differentiate which type of care you may need for your senior loved one.
“Live in caregiver” is someone who actually lives in the home of the client and has a dedicated bedroom and bathroom, providing constant oversight during that time. They provide care, companionship and activities during the client’s awake hours.
The live in caregiver has an 8-hour period to sleep where no care is provided and additional breaks during daytime working hours. The caregiver is in the home to assist in an emergency, but care is not expected to be routinely provided during the overnight hours.
“24-hour” caregiving are several caregivers who work back-to-back 8-hour shifts in the care recipient’s home. This type of care is more appropriate for clients who have significant care needs throughout the day and night, such as fall risk when using the restroom or medication reminders, or the client’s living arrangement doesn’t support the requirements of a dedicated bedroom for a live in caregiver.
Live in Caregiver vs. Assisted Living/Nursing Facility Care
|Live In Caregiver||Facility Care|
|Offers 1-on-1 personal care||Care is shared among many residents|
|Familiar home environment more conducive to someone with memory impairment||New facility environment can exacerbate behaviors for someone with a memory impairment|
|Social and recreational opportunities and car transportation to events (with neighbors, family members, friends, etc)||In-house social and recreational opportunities (albeit with strangers and other residents)|
|Complete control on timing and type of meals||Scheduled meal times and limited options|
|Maintain familiar living environment||Move to unfamiliar living environment|
|Allows pets||Most residences prohibit pets|
The Role and Responsibilities of a Live In Caregiver:
- Companionship and socialization
- Assistance with activities of daily living (personal hygiene, dressing, feeding, etc)
- Meal preparation, shopping, transportation
- Medication reminders
- Liaising with family members and medical team

We provide the following professional services in the home, all coordinated and integrated for great outcomes: Skilled Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, Medical Social Worker and Home Health Aide.
Our specialty programs include: Advanced Wound Care, Parkinson’s care with LSVT Big & Loud and we treat chronic diseases such as CHF, COPD, diabetes and infections.
Five Star Home Health Care has a strategic partnership with Heal for physician house calls to our patients within their service area (limited to Arlington, Alexandria and Fairfax). Heal is a Medicare-covered service which provides a licensed Physician and Medical Assistant to provide medical care in the comfort of home that compliments our health services. Heal can adjust medications, perform blood work and they regularly communicate with your primary care physician.
Half of all individuals discharged from the hospital require additional care, treatment or rehabilitation. They want to go directly home – not to a nursing facility. The problem is that care is often poorly coordinated and it’s divided among many different providers. We make the process smoother and less worrisome by integrating home health services from one company. We are preferred by clients, hospitals and payers with our fully integrated post-acute care solution.
We provide 24/7 local management and staff in the markets we serve. We do not use centralized call centers. This approach has earned us an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. All of our services and locations are accredited by The Joint Commission – the hospital standard. We are Medicare certified.
